Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the Department of Economics.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the research project Social Mechanisms and Applications led by the Principal Investigator (PI), Professor David Levine.

The main goal of this project is to study social mechanisms and their allocations. Social norms are crucial for groups to succeed: from political parties, to labour unions, to special interest groups, even to criminal gangs. Each of these groups faces a free-rider problem: it is in the interest of each individual in the group to let the others do the work of advancing the common interest. Norms are equally pivotal in persuading individuals not to engage in anti-social behaviour, from littering, to thievery, and worse, where again a divide appears between individual goals and larger interests.

The project aims to link work in game theory to the operation of social norms in a heterogenous agents’ framework. The project will involve economists, psychologists, and computer scientists at Royal Holloway in order to understand how social norms develop and sustain themselves. The project will explain and illustrate how a willingness of individuals to bear small costs for the sake of society can be leveraged into system-wide institutional changes. The results will address both large questions that have defined the modern era – how can individuals be convinced to obey social rules that are not normally in their self-interest to follow? – and smaller puzzles of how institutions can better function. Levine does not foresee one-size-fits-all solutions. The norms that support some groups such as volunteer organizations providing health assistance to the poor promote the greater good, while in other cases, such as with special interest lobbying organizations, they can do harm. Public policies should therefore aim to foster the formation of useful social norms in some cases and to transform existing norms in other cases.

Levine’s earlier work on dynamic games has laid out the rules in economics for when self-interested agents will sacrifice current benefits for longer-term gains, provides the theoretical bridge to the present project. The team will explore more concretely how agents who interact dynamically come to learn norms and how they build productive norms in the first place. In the last decades, there has been emerging interest in algorithms to make predictions and decisions in financial markets. The project intends to add a new dimension by studying the interaction between machines and humans.

To answer these questions, a considerable innovation of the project is the use of economic experiments along with algorithmic simulations.

The project has both theoretical and empirical focusses along with subject experiments. Proven research ability in economic theory or programming knowledge of Python or related languages are desirable. Moreover, data management skills and a high level of competence in econometrics and machine learning are desired. Experience in economic experiments would also be desirable. Most of all, the successful candidate will have a great enthusiasm to conduct research on this topic.

This is a project funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The successful candidate will work 1/3 time directly on the project and 2/3 of the time on individual grant related research.

The successful candidate will work closely with the PI, Professor David Levine (Economics), and the research team including Professors: Michael Mandler (Economics), Francesco Feri (Economics), Kostas Stathis (Computer Science) and Ryan McKay (Psychology). They are expected to engage as a full member of the research team contributing to the theoretical and/or empirical analysis of social norms and economic institutions, using theoretical models, simulations, and designing and coding economic experiments, analysing causal relations, assisting with the development of the project’s output, including the preparation of outputs for journal submission.

The successful candidate will possess as many as possible of the following:

  1. PhD in relevant subject area: economics, computer science, mathematics / statistics, psychology, or related; (it is expected that the appointee will have their PhD awarded within 4 months of the start date)
  2. Training in using key software, including Python, at advanced level is a plus;
  3. Demonstrable comprehensive experience of research in heterogenous agent modelling;
  4. Designing economic experiments, setting up and coding economic experiment using major online platforms;
  5. Experience of coding complex structural estimations, simulations;
  6. Experience with constructing research funding proposals;
  7. Ability to keep accurate records, strong communication skills, experience with interacting with research users and with researchers from related disciplines, and ability to work independently under regular supervision as well as within a team setting.

The post is based in Egham, where the University is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London.

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact the project PI, Professor David Levine at david.levine@rhul.ac.uk

About MIT FutureTech

MIT FutureTech is an interdisciplinary group of economists, computer scientists, and engineers who study the foundations and economic implications of progress in computing and Artificial Intelligence. Economic and social change is underpinned by advances in computing: for instance, improvements in the miniaturization of integrated circuits, the discovery and refinement of algorithms, and the development and diffusion of better software systems and processes. We aim to identify and understand the trends in computing that create opportunities or risks and help leaders in computing, scientific funding bodies, and government to respond appropriately.

Our research therefore helps to answer important questions including: Will AI progress accelerate or decline – and should it? What are the implications for economic growth and for the labor markets? What are the bottlenecks to growth from AI, and how can they be solved? What are the risks from AI, and how can we mitigate them?

To support our research, we run seminars and conferences to better connect the field of computer scientists, economists, and innovation scholars to build a thriving global research community.

To disseminate it, we advise governments, nonprofits and industry, including via National Academies panels on transformational technologies and scientific reliability, the Council on Competitiveness’ National Commission on Innovation and Competitiveness Frontiers, and the National Science Foundation’s National Network for Critical Technology Assessment.

Our work has been funded by Open Philanthropy, the National Science Foundation, Microsoft, Accenture, IBM, the MIT-Air Force AI accelerator, and the MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

About EIT

The Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) Oxford’s purpose is to have a global impact by fundamentally reimagining the way science and technology translate into end-to-end solutions and delivering these solutions in programmes and platforms that respond to humanity’s most challenging problems.

EIT Oxford will ensure scientific discoveries and pioneering science are turned into products for the benefit of society that can have high-impact worldwide and, over time, be commercialised to ensure long-term sustainability.

Led by a faculty of world experts, EIT Oxford seeks to solve the world’s most challenging problems across four high-risk, high-reward, high-impact humane endeavours: health and medical science; food security and sustainable agriculture; climate change and clean energy; and government innovation in an era of artificial intelligence.

About the Economics Department

The Economics Department at EIT is recruiting a number of outstanding, full-time Predoctoral Research Fellows dedicated to advancing research at the intersection of economics, science and policy. This is an exciting opportunity to join a new and rapidly expanding group, under the leadership of Professor Andrew J.Scott, that will tackle frontier issues in the economics of health, longevity and ageing.

The EIT offers a stimulating research environment that focuses on both fundamental research as well as applied solutions directed at four high-impact humane endeavours – health and medical science, food security and sustainable agriculture, climate change and clean energy; and government innovation in an era of AI.

You will be part of a large and expanding Economics Group with strong links to a world-class AI team with access to large-scale datasets. The research programs offer a range of placements, providing the opportunity to work with a faculty of global academic experts producing research aimed at leading journals or learn how to shape government policies and create successful commercial products.

The group is growing rapidly, and this is a great opportunity to join at the beginning of the establishment of a world-class research centre. You will be part of a cohort of five Post-Doctoral Fellows and five Pre-Doctoral positions. Positions are full-time and of one and two-year duration, potentially renewable for further terms, subject to performance, with the option to rotate across projects.

With the opportunity to mix with leading academics across a range of institutions and participate in the research networks of academics and policymakers operating out of EIT these positions offer a unique track for establishing credentials for leading PhD programs or for providing a springboard for a career in policy or business.

Fellowships will begin around 01 September 2025, with provisions to start earlier.

About the role

The projects cover a range of theoretical and empirical issues with Fellows being allocated depending on their strengths and interests. The projects include:

  • Empirical modelling of the links between biology, health, disease and economic outcomes (e.g. labour force participation, earnings, occupational choice, retirement, etc).
  • Constructing micro-founded models to evaluate the macroeconomic case for preventative health.
  • Empirical and theoretical research on mechanisms for how an ageing society can deliver ‘an economic longevity dividend”.
  • Developing effective measures of health using large, novel datasets and identifying key causal factors via quasi-experimental techniques that would deliver effective prevention programs.
  • Work on theoretical models evaluating the welfare gains of better health, developing measures to improve the allocation of health resources.
  • The economic impact and consequences of vaccines, pathogen protection, preventative health and innovations in geroscience.
  • Future research programs will extend to cover the areas of food security, clean energy and effective government.

Why EIT?

EIT offers an exceptional research ecosystem defined by:

  • Strong interdisciplinary ethos with access to large teams in AI, biology, policy and medicine.
  • Versatile research opportunities that bridge fundamental science with real-world applications.
  • An emphasis on rigorous research, to identify novel evidence-backed solutions to pressing global problems.
  • The opportunity to work with and learn from global experts and publish high quality academic work as well as learn commercial skills.
  • Participate in mission driven networks combining senior academics, policymakers and entrepreneurs to ensure that research feeds into impact.
  • Access to world class computing facilities and extensive data.
  • A well-resourced environment with competitive salaries and benefits.

Skills required for the role:

  • A completed Bachelor’s, or a completed Master’s degree, or equivalent qualifications, with substantial quantitative work
  • A strong quantitative background
  • Experience with programming languages, in particular: Matlab or Python
  • Experience with statistical software, in particular: R or Stata
  • Working across broad scientific missions to identify and solve different economics problems

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a strong technical skillset and creative approach to problem solving. We do not require candidates with knowledge of health economics, but a focus on economic thinking.

Application requirements:

For both Fellowships, applications are open to candidates from the UK and abroad. Any offer of employment is subject to the eligibility to work in the UK.

Job duration: one-year and two-year positions

The Fellows will receive a full-time, one- or two-year appointment that is renewable annually. An employment term of at least two years is strongly preferred.

  • 2 letters of reference
  • CV
  • Job market paper
  • Cover letter

Application process

Applications should be submitted via Econjobmarket. We will interview candidates as they are shortlisted between December 2024 and February 2025.

Opportunity Insights (OI) at Harvard University is hiring several full-time predoctoral fellows to start in Summer 2025 to work with our research group and under the direction of Raj Chetty, John Friedman, and Nathan Hendren. OI is a nonpartisan research and policy institute focused on improving economic opportunity. Founded in 2018, OI has become a nationally and internationally recognized leader in the science of economic mobility and in the use of large administrative data to understand and address inequality. OI has published seminal work on national trends in upward mobility; racial disparities; the role of neighborhoods, social capital, and higher education in upward mobility; and the use of private-sector data to understand disparate impacts in the recent economic recession and recovery. Much of the team’s ongoing research uses quasi-experimental methods to identify causal effects and test the predictions of economic and sociological models. Examples of current research projects include: long-term impacts of neighborhoods and place-based policies, the role of colleges in upward mobility, using big data to address health disparities, and measuring how social networks affect mobility. OI’s work has shaped policy discussions at the national and local level, with nearly a dozen of its studies covered on the front pages of major media outlets, such as the New York Times, The Economist, The Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, and have been widely cited in policy discussions.

Fellows will be based at Harvard or Brown Universities under the direction of Professors Chetty, Friedman, and Hendren. The fellowship will include a variety of tasks that provide preparation for graduate school or other industry research positions, such as analyzing data, developing statistical models, creating presentations, and editing research papers. In addition to working with OI faculty, predoctoral fellows frequently co-author papers with other students or faculty members. Fellows will interact regularly with professors and their collaborators – such as Stefanie DeLuca, David Deming, Benny Goldman, Matthew Jackson, Larry Katz, Theresa Kuchler, Michael Stepner, and Johannes Stroebel – in a team-oriented lab environment, with regular lab meetings, seminars, and other events. Fellows also have the opportunity to support our research translation and policy work through such resources as the Opportunity Atlas, the Social Capital Atlas, and the Economic Tracker.

Fellows are invited to participate in broader activities at Harvard and Brown, including seminars and courses. The program serves as an ideal bridge between college and graduate school for students interested in empirical economics. Most previous fellows have gone on to top Ph.D. programs. Salary and benefits are competitive with other top predoctoral fellowships.

As an organization focused on economic mobility, we value the many backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences in our community. We welcome applications from persons from underrepresented groups. Even if applicants are uncertain whether their technical research skill or subject-matter knowledge will be competitive, we strongly encourage applications.

Applicants should have completed a bachelor’s degree (or be on track to complete by July 2025) or master’s degree, have strong quantitative skills, and experience with empirical research methods. Candidates with research experience are strongly preferred, especially those with programming experience in Stata, SAS, R, and/or Python. Candidates need not be Economics majors, though they should have a strong interest in and some experience with Economics. Successful candidates have come from a variety of backgrounds (including from undergraduate and graduate programs, industry jobs, and other research assistant positions), and have a range of skill levels and experience with coding.

Fellowships will begin around July 1, 2025. Fellows typically work at OI full-time for two years before starting graduate school in Economics or another social science or pursuing other related career paths.

Note: Persons may only apply once during the 2024-2025 academic year. If you applied in Fall 2024 and were not selected, you are not eligible to apply in Spring 2025; you may reapply in the 2025-2026 academic year (i.e., Fall 2025 or Spring 2026 hiring rounds).

APPLICATION DEADLINE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2025.

The IGIER Research Center at Bocconi University invites applications for a 12-month Research Grant related to the “MARKINDOWN - Monopsony Power and Inequality” ERC project.

Research Project:

MARKINDOWN is a multi-year project aiming at investigating the role played by monopsony (monopoly power in the demand for labor) in widening earning inequalities. Recent studies documented the pervasiveness of monopsony power in modern labor markets. Monopsonistic employers can cut wages without losing workers to competitors, pay labor below its productivity and hire fewer workers than in a competitive labor market. The resulting equilibrium is inefficient insofar as it reduces the size of the labor market.Moreover, workers tend to be exposed to excessive work injury risk. Monopsony contributes to explain declining labor shares of income, persistently high levels of workplace accidents, and limited disemployment effects of minimum wages. Much less is known about the role of monopsony in increasing earning inequality. This project aims at filling this gap by i) contributing to a better understanding of the sources of monopsony power and ii) assessing their relevance across different socio-economic groups.

Monopsony power can be due to anticompetitive arrangements introduced often in a non-transparent way in labor contracts. Another source of monopsony power is lack of information on alternative job opportunities. Frictions in the matching of workers and vacancies may discourage risk averse workers when planning to quit the firm after wage cuts. Spatial mismatch in the allocation of jobs and quitters may increase monopsony power vis-à-vis workers having a stronger distaste for commuting. Some groups of workers may also have stronger cognitive biases when interpreting available information on outside opportunities.

The MARKINDOWN project will i) assess the incidence of anticompetitive arrangements in Europe, ii) estimate firm-level labor supply elasticities across different categories of workers, and iii) using survey and experimental methods, evaluate to what extent the heterogeneity among socio-economic groups of willingness to quit a low-paid job is related to lack of information or cognitive biases.

Job Description:

The candidate will be directly involved in different phases of the PI's research project on the topic of monopsonistic power and its implications for income inequalities and will carry out his own research activity on these topics.

The profile is that of a young researcher who is about to obtain or has obtained a doctorate in economics, particularly interested in the fields of the labor market, labour supply elasticity estimates, no-compete clauses in employment contracts, social protection, and industrial relations, with solid foundations in empirical methodologies and data analysis. Prior experience in survey design and implementation as well as in the delivery of information experiments is highly valued, although not mandatory.

If you are interested, please apply here by 19th January 2025.
