The Growth Lab at Harvard University is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to spearhead research on green growth, focusing on analyzing supply chains for clean energy technologies and leveraging this data to influence strategic industrial policy.

Project Background:
An important green growth opportunity is for countries to manufacture products in supply chains for clean energy technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines, and electrolyzers. But policymakers often find analyses of these manufacturing opportunities lacking and insufficient to guide policy effectively. This project will draw on analytical approaches from economic complexity, sustainability science and network science to evaluate which parts of which supply chains are most feasible and valuable in different places and assess how countries can use policy to become involved in clean energy supply chains. This project will aim both to apply existing methods and generate new or customized methods to tackle problems related to industrial policy in clean energy supply chains. Developing better analyses of these issues promises to promote better policy design around decarbonization and the economic transition it requires.

Responsibilities:

  • Use environmentally-extended input-output databases, life cycle inventory databases, and methodologies from network science, economic complexity, and other quantitative methods to analyze and interpret supply chain data.
  • Contribute insights towards economic complexity, structural diversification, and their implications for green growth strategies.
  • Employ Python and R programming for data analysis and modeling purposes.
  • Support writing publications that document our methods and use cases in policy application.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of interdisciplinary researchers around green economic growth.
  • Support mapping of supply chains related to clean energy technologies.

Requirements:

  • PhD awarded and interest in problems related to the energy transition, economic growth and industrial development.
  • Background in Industrial Ecology, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability Science, Environmental System Engineering, Economics, Economic Geography or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Python and R programming languages for data analysis and modeling.
  • Familiarity with input-output analysis and network science methodologies.
  • Knowledge of databases such as Dun & Bradstreet, Ecoinvent, Compustat, Patstat and Orbis would be helpful.
  • Knowledge of theory around economic growth, economic complexity, structural diversification and macroeconomics would be helpful.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Benefits:

  • Opportunity to work within a world-class research environment at Harvard University.
  • Collaborate with leading experts and policymakers in the field of green growth.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Access to unparalleled resources and opportunities for professional development.

This post is for an extendable one-year contract (it is anticipated that the position would be extended for multiple years.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is a nonpartisan research and policy institute that advances federal and state policies to help build a nation where everyone — regardless of income, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ZIP code, immigration status, or disability status — has the resources they need to thrive and share in the nation’s prosperity.

CBPP combines rigorous research and analysis, strategic communications, and effective advocacy to shape debates, affect policy, and inform effective implementation both nationally and in states. It works closely with a broad set of national, state, and community organizations to design and advance policies that promote economic justice; improve health; broaden opportunity in areas like housing, health care, employment, and education; and lower structural barriers for people of color and others in communities that continue to face systemic barriers to opportunity. CBPP promotes policies that will build a more equitable nation and fair tax policies that can support these gains over the long term. CBPP also shows the harmful impacts of policies and proposals that would deepen poverty, widen disparities, and worsen health outcomes.

<a style="box-sizing: border-box; color: inherit; overflow-wrap: anywhere; word-break: normal;">Over the next two years,</a> federal and state policymakers face critical fiscal policy questions that get at the heart of where we are headed as a nation — who will get invested in, how will we finance those investments, and will we build toward a country where the economy works for everyone? In 2025, regardless of the outcomes of the elections this fall, policymakers will make a number of consequential policy decisions — from addressing expiring tax and health provisions to deciding who and what we will invest in as a nation — that will have a significant impact on the economy and the well-being of millions of people. CBPP is preparing for these debates now and will be deeply involved in shaping these decisions in ways that promote economic justice and broaden opportunity.

To further this work, CBPP seeks an economist to engage on macroeconomic, fiscal policy, and labor market issues. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator looking to bring economic analysis to real-world policies and debates that will affect the nation’s future and the lives of millions of people. The ideal candidate will also have experience in one or more of the following areas: macroeconomics, fiscal policy, labor market issues, poverty and inequality, racial equity, housing, and discrimination. This position is an excellent opportunity for an economist who wants to engage deeply and meaningfully in critical policy issues. We are interested in candidates looking to join CBPP on a permanent basis (Chief Economist) or for 18-24 months (Visiting Scholar).

The Chief Economist or Visiting Scholar will be a senior leader within CBPP’s Federal Fiscal Policy team and will serve as an advisor to CBPP leaders, including the President, and as a resource to the entire organization. The Federal Fiscal Policy team analyzes the federal budget, budget proposals, and long-term budget trends. Its tax policy work focuses on revenue adequacy, fairness, racial equity, and tax compliance as well as the impact of tax policies on the economy. It also works on issues related to the federal budget process and its rules, which can have a significant effect on the policymaking process. The Federal Fiscal Policy team includes research assistants who would be available to assist the Chief Economist or Visiting Scholar and mid- and senior-level staff with expertise in budget issues, federal taxes, Social Security and disability policy, and the U.S. territories.

Applicants seeking long-term employment or a term position of <a name="_Int_bndJcPht" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: inherit; overflow-wrap: anywhere; word-break: normal;"></a>18 months to two years are welcome to apply. Those hired into a term position would be a Visiting Scholar, while those seeking a long-term position would be the Chief Economist<a style="box-sizing: border-box; color: inherit; overflow-wrap: anywhere; word-break: normal;">.</a>

Responsibilities

  • Engage in key economic debates through writing, speaking, working with partners, participating in and planning convenings, talking to press, and engaging on social media.
  • Partner with others at CBPP to engage with policymakers and their staff. The Chief Economist or Visiting Scholar will work on a mix of short- and long-term projects on a range of current economic debates.
  • Keep abreast of the state of the economy and the latest macroeconomic data, including tracking key trends and analyzing their implications across different income and demographic groups.
  • The Chief Economist or Visiting Scholar will engage on a number of potential issues. These may include:
    • The advantages of strengthening the revenue base and addressing other shortcomings of our current revenue system, including its favorable treatment of high-income and high-wealth households and profitable businesses;
    • The impact of federal and state fiscal and programmatic policies on labor market outcomes, particularly as they relate to marginalized populations and people in low-paying jobs and the special economic challenges they face;
    • The importance of increasing public investment in people and communities, including how investments can benefit the economy overall, improve measures of well-being, and promote equity;
    • The distributional and equity implications of tax and budget policies, including addressing persistent income and wealth inequality across racial and ethnic groups;
    • The economic implications of the nation’s long-term federal fiscal trajectory;
    • The role of monetary policy on the economy;
    • Labor policies such as minimum wage, unemployment insurance, and paid leave;
    • The economic impacts of economic and health security policies; and
    • Trends in housing and impacts on households with low incomes.

Qualifications:

<a name="_Int_ZljqRXDR" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: inherit; overflow-wrap: anywhere; word-break: normal;"></a>We don’t expect candidates to have expertise in all of these areas. We are seeking candidates with expertise in macroeconomics, labor economics, and some policy issues relevant to our work; a willingness to explore the economic questions in some new areas in partnership with CBPP experts; and a desire to engage in public debate to influence policymaking.

  • Experience and interest in applying economic knowledge and principles to current debates;
  • Ability to communicate economic principles and the impacts of government policies for non-academic policy audiences, including policymakers and media, and to help them understand how economic issues and policy decisions affect people and communities;
  • Interest in working on issues that are in the public debate and that policymakers will decide on in the near-term, willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with quick-turnaround projects, and a commitment to CBPP’s mission (https://www.cbpp.org/about);
  • The strongest candidates will have prior experience in engaging in national policy issues or prior experience in government or think tanks;
  • Minimum ten to fifteen years of relevant experience; and
  • Master’s degree or PhD in Economics. Related academic training or experience in the role of an economist will also be considered.

This position reports to the Senior Vice President for Federal Fiscal Policy.

Terms of Employment: Chief Economist: full-time, exempt, permanent. Visiting Scholar: full time, exempt, 18-24-month term.

Bargaining Unit Status: This is not a bargaining unit position.

CBPP currently operates on a hybrid work schedule that includes at least two days per week in-person at our Washington, D.C. office; up to 10 percent travel for events will be expected. We will consider remote candidates for this position, but up to 20 percent travel to our office for team meetings and/or events is required. While a remote candidate would have some flexibility around their regular working hours, they would be required to attend meetings during core business hours on Eastern Time as needed and would be expected to meet Eastern Time deadlines.

Compensation: The salary range for the role is $150,000 to the low $200,000s annually, with the exact salary to be determined based on total relevant experience. Excellent benefits (including health insurance, vision and dental coverage, life and long-term disability insurance, retirement, MERP, and DCAP) and generous vacation, sick leave, and holiday schedules.

Please upload a cover letter and resume. In your cover letter, please include a discussion of what draws you to the Center's mission.

The Initiative for Financial Decision-Making is looking to hire a postdoctoral fellow. The position is based at the Stanford Graduate School of Business under the supervision of Professor Annamaria Lusardi, faculty director of the Initiative. The fellowship begins in the summer of 2024 (no later than 9/1/2024) and is appointed for one year, with an option to renew assuming performance at or above expectations. A two-year term is strongly preferred. The position is in person with a salary range of $80 - $95K.

The core of the work focuses on empirical research on financial literacy and financial decision-making. The new Initiative for Financial Decision-Making leverages and builds on more than 10 years of research by the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC), which Professor Lusardi founded. Since its inception in 2011, GFLEC has pioneered breakthrough tools to measure financial literacy, spearheaded the research field, and developed and advised financial educational programs in the US and around the world. More information about the work done so far can be found on this website: https://gflec.org/

The new Initiative for Financial Decision-Making is advancing the existing work with a strong and cutting-edge research agenda. The research work uses data, economic theory, and analytics to understand what drives households’ financial literacy and money management. Planned projects include, for example, the analysis of (i) financial fragility levels among U.S. adults over the past twelve years; (ii) risk comprehension and its consequences among investors; (iii) the effect of financial literacy on households’ financial situations and behavior; and (iv) the effect of educational interventions on financial knowledge and behavior.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to produce academic research from the Initiative’s agenda and will work closely and directly with all members of the Initiative, including the director, co-authors of academic papers, PhD students, and other postdoctoral fellows. This is a dedicated research community with plenty of interaction and the expectation of both working collaboratively in smaller groups but also independently on projects. Progress on the research is required to be presented regularly to a broader group of stakeholders of the Initiative. The fellow is expected to be actively involved in the Initiative’s intellectual community by participating in meetings, research lunches/colloquia, and potentially joint projects. The fellow is also encouraged to integrate with the broader research community at Stanford by attending seminars and other events.

The primary criterion for acceptance is research excellence in household/personal finance or applied economics and a clear interest in contributing to the Initiative’s research. The position requires someone with a strong background in the field, i.e. a PhD in Economics or Finance. A focus on household finance or program evaluation is preferred. If necessary, Stanford will provide a J1 visa, or you can use Optional Practical Training, if applicable.

Further inquiries about the position can be directed to GSB Postdoc Affairs: gsbpostdoc_affairs@stanford.edu.

For full consideration, please submit application materials by April 22, 2024. Rolling applications will be reviewed up to April 26, 2024.

You will be asked to submit:

1. A research statement summarizing your research, future research plans, and your interest in the Initiative for Financial Decision-Making’s postdoctoral position

2. A current CV

3. Up to two working papers/publications/work in progress.

4. Arrange for at least three letters of recommendation to be submitted by the deadline. Further letters up to five are permissible.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to our mission at the GSB. We believe we will best enact our educational and research missions when all members of our community are able to leverage the experiences and ideas of others, embrace different viewpoints, feel that they belong, and know that their contributions are valued.

Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Stanford welcomes applications from all who would bring additional dimensions to the University’s research, teaching and clinical missions.

Please apply by submitting your materials to gsbpostdoc_affairs@stanford.edu

To apply, send a message to gsbpostdoc_affairs@stanford.edu. (See posting for details.)

Overview

Vital City provides practical solutions, deeply rooted in research and evidence, to urban problems, particularly public safety. These ideas are presented in a policy journal, original research, public convenings and more. We seek to bring to life the best ideas about how New York and other cities can be healthy, vibrant and safe, aiming to make these solutions — and the facts behind them — accessible to all, as knowledge and debate are the cornerstones of a strong democracy. The ideas we publish come from a variety of sources, and reflect thinking across a broad political spectrum. What ties the ideas together is a commitment to the best of the liberal democratic tradition: belief in progress, a dedication to the collective work of changing society for the better and a commitment to humility, curiosity and empiricism.

Vital City is looking for a Director of Research and Analytics. As part of our leadership team, the Director will help launch into the public sphere ideas and evidence to improve civic life, and will help develop the ideas and data behind our regular publications. We are seeking a curious, open-minded, creative, energetic, entrepreneurial and collegial person to develop this key piece of the venture. The ideal candidate is someone who is familiar with crime and justice in New York City and other places, skilled in using data and research to improve urban life and attuned to the variations in the quality of evidence and data. Because Vital City is focused on providing timely and useful information to policy makers and the public, the candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and using the best data available, which is often neither perfect nor complete.

Responsibilities

The Director will be responsible for developing three areas of activity:

  • Identify, analyze and communicate key trends in public safety and specific policies through the preparation of regular reports on the overall trends and on particular topics. Some examples: the rise and fall in shootings during and after the pandemic; the operations of the New York State bail law and its impact on safety and fairness; how proposals to address subway safety align with the best evidence (or don’t); the drivers of the size of the jail population and the conditions inside. This work may be communicated through white papers, fact sheets, convenings, op-eds or other approaches. Examples of some of this work can be found on our website. We value skills in building compelling data visualizations to represent those trends.
  • Translate and disseminate the most promising ideas coming out of the worlds of research and practice into terms that public policy decision-makers can use: that is, communicate key ideas briefly and directly and, working with other partners, show the operations necessary to implement the idea, including the projected costs and benefits.
  • Oversee the building of a publicly available dataset displaying key information related to the operation of the criminal justice system (e.g. crime complaints, arrests, arraignments, pretrial proceedings, jail admissions and demographics) and eventually datasets related to social distress (e.g. employment, health outcomes, physical conditions, school achievement). This includes working with web developers and designers in order to ensure a display that makes the information accessible to a broad audience.

Skills & Qualifications

Education

  • An MS, MA or PhD in economics, sociology, criminology, data analytics or a related field that requires strong quantitative and analytic skills.
  • At least four years of experience performing analysis of crime and justice trends in a government, non-profit or applied research setting or some other demonstration of a strong command of the real-world context within which crime, incarceration and other trends occur.

Technical skills

  • Exceptional skills and experience in quantitative research.
  • Experience working with municipal or state-level administrative data, and an ability to use an array of datasets for the direct and indirect measurement of social phenomena. Experience with criminal justice data, especially New York criminal justice databases, preferred.
  • Ability to communicate complex statistical data and concepts to a variety of audiences in emails, memos, reports, slides and oral presentations.

Professional skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality, adhering to deadlines and maintaining collegiality.
  • Excellence in writing, editing and researching.
  • Demonstrated project and staff management experience, delivering understandable research materials from design to publication in coordination with colleagues.

Vital City is a new enterprise in the process of developing its systems and infrastructure. We are looking for someone who will be comfortable (and good-humored) working in our dynamic environment.

To Apply You are strongly encouraged to read Vital City’s publications before applying.

Please send the following to info@vitalcitynyc.org with “Research Director” in the subject line:

  • Resume or CV.
  • A piece of writing that you are proud of and that you believe aligns with Vital City’s goals or that demonstrates a clear ability to contribute to the improvement of public policy.
  • A short piece (not more than 300 words) describing why you believe you are a good fit for Vital City.

Application period will close on April 29, 2024.

Location: Remote, though residency in New York City is preferred

Salary range: $120,000-160,000, commensurate with experience and location
