  • an innovative, creative and proactive approach to solving problems

    We offer:

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Applied Economics. Seeking candidates from any field, with a preference for candidates with a focus on econometrics. The ideal candidate would work on applied questions/issues using strong quantitative frameworks. The candidate must have a world-class research program and an ambitious research agenda. The holder of the Chair will implement a creative and independent research program that is based on external research funding and will be actively involved with graduate student training and education. The Chair will be appointed to the Department of Economics, and will be expected to teach and supervise graduate students in this unit.

Located on the unceded territory of Anishinaabe Algonquin people, in the heart of the nation's capital, the University of Ottawa is one of Canada's top ten research-intensive universities and is recognized as the first and largest bilingual university in North America. It offers its 47,000 students and 5,500 employees a dynamic and stimulating environment where research and knowledge are fundamental to all aspects of university life. The University is situated in close proximity to the Parliament of Canada, multiple national agencies including Statistics Canada, as well various provincial and municipal agencies.

Tier 2 Chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. For each Tier 2 Chair, the Canada Research Chairs Program allocates to institutions $100,000 annually for five years with an additional $20,000 annual research stipend for first-term Tier 2 Chairs. In addition to the government’s contribution, the University also provides a generous funding package and partial teaching release. New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.

Candidates should, at a minimum, be Assistant or Associate Professors, or possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels. Candidates who are more than 10 years from their highest degree must contact the University of Ottawa directly for questions related to their potential eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair. The institution may nominate a professor or a researcher who is more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of nomination and has experienced legitimate career interruptions (see acceptable justifications). In such cases, the institution must submit to the Secretariat a formal justification (using the Tier 2 Justification Screening Form), explaining why the nominee is still considered to be an emerging scholar. The University recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process..

Standard Hiring:

The University of Ottawa is committed to ensuring equity, diversity and inclusion in the scholarly and leadership environments of our students, staff, and faculty. Accordingly, we strongly encourage applications from skilled and experienced members of the four designated groups (such as Indigenous peoples, racialized individuals, persons with disabilities, women and gender equity-seeking groups, as defined in the CRC Program method for establishing equity targets and the Employment Equity Act), as well as from all qualified candidates with the skills and knowledge to productively implement equity measures that ensure and retain diverse teams and promote inclusive practices for team members. All candidates are asked to complete the confidential self-identification form during the application process online (Employment Equity Questionnaire). Internal candidates are not eligible.

Skills requirements:

  • Education: Ph.D. in economics or a related discipline.

The Institute of Economics and Law at the University of Stuttgart is seeking an

Assistant Professor (fixed-term) / Research Associate (m/f/d)

for the Political Economy of Global Development Lab. In the lab, we work on a range of cross-cutting economic topics such as inequality, fairness and justice views, individual and political decision-making, and (almost) all aspects of economic development. We use state-of-the-art quantitative methods, ranging from quasi-experimental and experimental methods, including field, lab, and survey experiments, to machine learning. We also specialize in uncovering new insights from unconventional data sources, especially geospatial data derived from contemporary satellites and historical sources.

We currently have ten members in the lab and are looking for a new team member with a strong drive to develop and advance their research agenda and actively contribute to our lab activities. We are committed to creating a productive research environment, providing ample support for publishing in top-tier journals, including research assistants, conference funding, and an independent budget. With our strong regional and international networks, you will have various opportunities for research stays and (international) collaborations.

Your Tasks:

  • Conduct independent research in the lab's core areas using experimental or quasi-experimental methods.
  • Publish in high-ranking international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research results at international conferences, workshops, and seminars.
  • Apply for and manage third-party funded projects independently or collaboratively.
    Establish research collaborations.
  • Participate in workshop organization.
  • Teach (a moderate load of 2 x 90 mins per week) with flexibility in course design (e.g., seminars), scheduling/ blocking, and load reductions for thesis supervision. German language skills are a plus and required by the end of the second year.

Your Profile:

  • An outstanding PhD in Economics or a related quantitative field (e.g., Data Science, Political Science/Public Policy).
  • Excellent knowledge of methods (e.g., applied econometrics and/or machine learning) and/or experimental methods (e.g., lab and field experiments and/or survey design).
  • Interest in topics in one or more of the following areas: economic inequality, concepts of fairness and justice, political economy, and/or development economics.
  • Ability to work independently, good organizational skills, and high motivation.
  • Very good command of English, both written and spoken.
  • International experience is an advantage.

Our team values a supportive and family-friendly working environment. We value clear communication, and our streamlined application process ensures that candidates can engage directly with faculty early in the hiring process. More information on the lab can be found at www.ivr.uni-stuttgart.de/en/eco/research/PEGDev. Please feel free to email Dietmar Fehr (dietmar.fehr@ivr.uni-stuttgart.de) or Richard Bluhm (richard.bluhm@ivr.uni-stuttgart.de) with any questions.

The position is 100% FTE, for 6 years (3 plus 3 after an interim evaluation). Although this is not a tenure-track position, it provides significant opportunities for career growth, including active mentoring. The pay scale will be E13 TV-L or A13 (LBesGBW) if the personal and professional requirements are met. The University of Stuttgart aims to increase the share of women and explicitly encourages women to apply. Full-time positions are generally divisible. Disabled persons with equivalent qualifications will be given preference. Employment is carried out by the central administration.

We also offer a Postdoc position for two years (can be split into two 1-year positions), see here Postdoc 1-2yrs.

The application deadline is Novermber 24, 2024 (for both positions). We will conduct virtual interviews as part of the 2024-2025 European Job Market between Monday, 16 December and Thursday, 19 December 2024. Fly-outs will start in mid-January.
